The problem with grooves

A lot is made each year of groove technology in Wedges. Sharper, more precise grooves offering even more spin and control. That does rather divert us from the real issue with grooves. They wear.

groove wear on wedges

Already after 18 months of average use, the ball is rolling out nearly twice as much as the new Wedge, because of the significant loss of spin. After 36 months the ball is going to roll a considerable distance making it difficult to get short-pitch shots close to flags on the front half of the green.

The manufacturers are right, grooves are very important. New grooves are more effective than old grooves. And clean grooves are even more important. So make sure you're cleaning your Wedges and keeping your grooves in the best condition.

If you’d like us to check you spin rate on your short pitch-shots, drop in and see us or give us a call to book a time with Matt or Heath.
